How do you plan financially as a professional athlete, balancing your competitive edge on the track

I constantly seek advice to improve my performance on and off the track. As an athlete I train and work towards becoming better at what I do. My circle is surrounded by passionate people in their selective industries. We all share the same value of focusing on the future. Track and field can be a short career and injuries can happen at any time, sometimes they can end your career in a split second. You can say the same thing about finances, anything can happen unexpectedly and having a plan for these events is important.

Setting goals on and off the track is important, short- and long-term goals.

How do you focus on staying healthy and training for big competitions?

Staying focus only gets harder the higher you go and have access to new things, people, hobbies and opportunities. I stay focus and healthy by evaluating my options. If the option presented does not make me a better athlete then I stay away from it. I am also learning the same with my finances, if the purchase is not getting me closer to my goals, I do not buy it. I enjoy public speaking but if the bookings interfere with my regiment training schedule I decline as my performance on the track is priority.

How do you make sure when you stop running you have a strong financial backup?

I live my life by the mantra – “Create different streams of income”. Financial knowledge is important and making sure I have regular conversations with a financial planner to explore my options to create and preserve my wealth.

What’s the best money tip you have received in your career?

Mum – “Do you think money grows on trees?”

Pay yourself first before you spend.

What’s a money tip you would offer other young athletes starting out or people in general?

Make money doing what you love and budget.
